wrap-up

November 30th, 2006

Well, this is the last post for NaBloPoMo. I’ve had fun posting this month, and it has gotten me back in the habit of blogging, but really, about four or five of those posts never should have been written. They were boring, pointless, and forced. So while I do plan to blog with more regularity than I did in, say, October, I probably won’t blog everyday. Until I decide that I really dislike my readers…

tagged - three things

November 29th, 2006

Caroline found this on Mama Loves…, and tagged Rebecca, Casey, and I, so here you go:

1. 3 Things that scare me: snakes, snakes, and did I mention snakes?, oh, and heights, and elevators (although I have to use one everyday since I work on the 15th floor)

2. 3 People who make me laugh: Jack, most of my friends, Jorge Cham (although he also makes me want to cry)

3. 3 Things I love: the crisp feel in the air in the early fall (or late fall, or sometime in January, if you’re in Texas), water, and snow

4. 3 Things I hate: that is a strong word, but things I dislike include people who tailgate, arrogance, and traffic

5. 3 Things I don’t understand: anything under the hood of a car, how anyone could actually enjoy heights, most foreign languages (including almost everything people say in the two languages I’ve tried to learn)

6. 3 Things on my desk (at work): a picture of Jack and I in Gettysburg, a (stuffed) ladybug, a Looney Labs Happy Flower

7. 3 Things I’m doing right now: typing, watching TV, drinking a glass of water

8. 3 Things I want to do before I die: take Jack to see the Rockies, travel the world, coach football at the collegiate or professional level

9. 3 Things I can do: play capoeira, cook, make a clover leaf with my tongue

10. 3 Things I can’t do: trill my r’s (kind of important for speaking Spanish, I realize), play golf (I know, a sport I’m not good at), speak fluent Portuguese (I’m working on it, though)

11. 3 Things I think you should listen to: yourself, those who support you, and U2

12. 3 Things you should never listen to: those who doubt you

13.3 things I would like to learn: the proper technique for swimming freestyle, how to do a kickoff in football, how to play the violin

14. 3 Favorite foods: yes, please, but if I have to choose, then Mexican (specifically Tex-Mex), Italian, Chocolate

15. 3 Beverages I drink regularly: coffee (espresso), water, Diet Coke/Diet Dr. Pepper

16. 3 Shows I watched as a kid: NFL football, Sherlock Holmes, umm, really not much

17. 3 People I’m tagging (to do this meme): anyone at all - if you do it, send me a comment

finally

November 27th, 2006

Eight months after the trip, the comic is up:

PhD Comics Visits UT

I wish I hadn’t been busy that night, as it seems the party was eventful (or at least illuminating).

back home

November 26th, 2006

Our return trip only took 4.5 hours, and only involved ten miles on the I-35 service road due to a wreck. Quite an improvement from Wednesday.

It was fun to be in Dallas, but it’s nice to be back.

Austin really is starting to feel like home. Of course, I’m really not that familiar with either city I did my undergrad in, lacking a car for most of the time and also living on campus. Baltimore is a disaster, so of course I never felt settled there. Austin is not too big, but big enough to have a lot going on. And I’m meeting great people, and old friends are continuing to move here.

I like the new Bond! No real plot spoilers for those who haven’t seen it:

Casino Royale was a little confusing, as it was the first Bond novel, and it is his first mission, but yet M is old and the technology is modern. However, I do like Bond. He is raw, and a little more fun than the refined versions, although of course no one will take Sean Connery’s place.
